“Putting the Blocks Together to Build a Story”
Block One“Very good!” said Bella’s Mum enthusiastically, but she was talking to Bella’s sister not Bella. Bella went back to her shoelace, she had been trying to tie it for ages concentrated very hard, but did not seem to make progress. She had successfully made one bow, now she had to make a second one.
Bella heard Mother Doll continue to praise Bella’s sister. “You’re reading has improved so much Novella. I’m quite sure you could read in front of people now. Maybe even the King! He’s coming to visit us this afternoon.”
“I can read too…” murmured Bella, but her mum didn’t hear. Bella pushed her black locks out of her button eyes and made a second bow. Again she tried to tie the two together. ‘Over the fence and through the rabbit hole, then stretch.’ It worked! Bella had tied her first shoelace!
Amazed and happy with herself she jumped up and cried. “Mum I’ve done it!” and she ran up to show her. “At last Bella, finally you’ve got it.” smiled Mother Doll. “How long have you been trying now?”
“Only a little while,” which wasn’t entirely true, Bella just wanted her mum to be proud of her. Mother doll turned her attention to Novella and selected a book from the shelf. “Now I’d like you to read this one for the king.” Unsmiling Bella turned away. She felt all horrible and rejected and the corners of her lips began to quaver. ‘No’ she told herself. ‘You mustn’t cry.’
Block Two
The king’s name was Toy Maker and he had built Knicknack City all by himself. What is more, he created the toys that lived there as well. Today he was coming out of his large Toy Factory to be them all. Oh it was quite exciting. A great buzz went throughout the building blocks of the city.
Toy Maker would visit every suburb of Knicknack City, then a great banquet would be held afterwards and the toys would eat together with their maker. Every kind of toy would show their love for the king anyway they could, with whatever ability they had. They were all determined to bless the king…but for Novella.
“I don’t want to read for the king,” she said angrily.
“Why ever not!?” said Mother Doll amazed.
“I don’t like Him He has too many rules we have to follow.”
“The king puts rules in place to keep us safe. He loves us and knows best. His wisdom is better than our own.”
“Well I love him!” said Bella sternly, giving her sister a fierce stare. “And I’ll do what ever I can for him.”
“What can you do?”
Bella didn’t answer. The tone in Novella’s voice was so terrible that she had to turn away fighting very hard to hold the tears of string that welled up in her button eyes.
“That’ll be enough,” said Mother Doll. “Shame on you both. We shall celebrate the king’s visit whether you want to or not.” And so it was decided. Mother doll had the final word. Novella reluctantly took the book from her mum and soon the three made there way into the city.
Block ThreeThe suburb where Bella and her family lived was Dollsville. Many dolls gathered together in the square where a stage had been erected. The excitement in the air was electric. Mother Doll looked at her watch.
“He’ll be here soon,” and soon he was! The King’s plan was to stay a while and then move on through the city. After Dollsville the king would go on to Wooden Valley and finally Animal Crossing.
Now Toy Maker was not dressed like a king. He didn’t wear a crown or kingly robes. He wore a cap and a tan apron and dark green overalls. He did not wear a cape or jewels, he wore a green checked shirt and brown steel capped work boots. He may not have looked kingly but you felt you had to bow before him all the same. His face was kind but not weak. His arms rippled with muscle yet his embrace was gentle. His eyes sparkled with inner light. It was catching – likewise the toys eyes shone too.
Block Four
Mayor Doddlesworth, a large balding doll in a blue three-piece suit proudly took the microphone when the king was settled. “It is a great pleasure to have you in our midst O king! We know we cannot enjoy your visit for long so on with the show! We have a few dolls that are excited to perform for you this afternoon.”
“But before they do,” said an older lady doll bustling onto the stage holding a wonderful tray of muffins and scones. She wore a pink hat ringed with roses, Grey hair spilled away from under her hat and curled at the sides. Her cheeks were painted red, a frilly apron was tied around her large tummy. “I have made you some scones and muffins,” she walked down the stage stairs smiling broadly and went across to the king.
“Thank you for your offering, Mrs. Maple.”
The old lady made an awkward curtsy. “Think nothing of it Your Majesty.”
“First up,” came the voice of the Mayor wanting the king’s attention for himself. “Brianna the Ballerina will dance for you!”
Brianna the Ballerina, a stunning green eyed doll sprung onto the stage with the ease of a gazelle, her blonde hair propped up like Pebbles Flintstone, swayed atop her head. Lilting music began to play and she began to dance with all her heart.
Brianna the Ballerina glided gracefully across the stage on tippy-toes, her transparent rosy pink tutu shifted with her movements like a flag sways to the soft rhythm of a breeze. Her pale blue leotard stretches smoothly with her every pirouette, plie and chassé. Once her routine was over she bowed in ballerina style to the passionate applause of the audience. Toy Maker smiled warmly.
Block FiveMayor Doddlesworth took the microphone once again. “And now may I present Ode, he has a rhyme he’d like to share. Ode came onto the stage. The doll wore a cowboy’s hat and from under it messy orange straw-like hair stuck out all over the place. He wore a metallic grey jacket lined with coppery silk, no shirt donned his bronze chest, his tanned torso is in good shape – he is a bit of a heart throb among the female dolls. He took the mic from the mayor and recited his poem like it was the best one in all of toyworld.
The rolling hills of the Aspernene,
painted green like I’ve never seen.
The sun o’er the desert Wroe.
as yellow as the Dune Sparrow.
The ocean by Fenleo Sward,
as blue as Brianna’s leotard.
But the view that I like most is
is the smile – ling of the king.
Rapturous applause exploded from the crowd again and it feed into Ode’s ego. The king smiled obligingly.
“Next we have a song from Ballad and Melody!” Two dolls walked over to the microphone prim and proper. The toys looked as stiff as boards and appeared very afraid. But as soon as Ballad began to strum his guitar and Melody opened her mouth to sing the place was filled with awe. The singers relaxed and let the tune in their hearts completely escape and float through the square. When the song ended everydoll was silent. Mayor Doddlesworth did not want to break the quiet but he had to.
“We have one more performance and then we must let the king move on.” The Mayor adjusted his specks and looked at his piece of paper. ‘Uh hum, we have Novella reading for us a story called ‘Crisp and the Silver Chalice of Gold’.”
The mayor looked around and noticed Novella behind the stage curtain shaking her head furiously; she didn’t want to do it! Seeing this as her opportunity to prove to everyone and especially the king of her worth, Bella climbed onto the stage, (before Mother Doll could stop her) seized the story out of her sister’s hands and approached the microphone. Mayor Doddlesworth hurriedly bent the stand so that Bella could speak into the mic.
Bella opened the book and began to read but she didn’t get very far, the words were all too big for her! She flushed a deep crimson, the audience fidgeted, looking every where else but at the little girl doll. Bella let ‘Crisp and the Silver Chalice of Gold’ fall from her hands and fled the stage.

__________ _________ ______ ___________ ________________
Block SixBella had seen her mum annoyed before, but this time Mother Doll was even madder. After Bella had fled the stage and hid behind the curtains Toy Maker stood and thanked everydoll for their efforts and moved onto his next port of call. Bella popped her head out from the silver-blue curtains and watched Toy Maker leave—he looked sad.
Suddenly Bella felt a sharp pain ripple through her ear, Mother Doll had the pinch on it and in her other hand Mother Doll had pinned Novella’s ear. “You have disgraced me!” yelled Mother Doll. “Both of you. Fortunately for you I would like to go to the banquet tonight, because I would have taken you both home this instant and sent you to bed!” Mother Doll sat down on the stage steps. “Here we will wait until it is time for the banquet.”
They did so and waited miserably.
Block SevenAfter a few hours Mother Doll had calmed down… slightly. Mother Doll didn’t like sitting around doing nothing as much as her daughters. When the hour had finally arrived for the banquet the trio joined the throng that chugged along toward an immense table designed in such away to fit every resident of Knicknack City.
Oh and what a marvellous time they all had. Toys who would ordinarily pass by each other on the street without saying hello, told their life stories to each other. There was enough food to feed a small country and did not seem to reach its end! Mother Doll was feeling much better about things and had quite forgotten the altercation with her daughters.
The time for the king to return home came all too soon.
Block EightAs the king was preparing to leave, a rich cuddly bunny from Animal Crossing called Gifter bounced up to Toy Maker. Gifter’s servant Sandal, a mouse, was struggling to push a trolley filled to the brim and more with presents and parcels.
“Before you go Oh king I would like to thank you on behalf of all the toys, for coming and supping with us this delightful evening. As a token of my appreciation…” Gifter rabbited on. “I wish to bestow upon you some gifts, a public spectacle of my wealth.”
With that the bunny’s mouse-servant Sandal took a tall step ladder out of the trolley and set it up before the king. It took the little mouse several trips up and down the ladder to empty the trolley of its packages and load them into the king’s arms!
There were so-o many presents that the king struggled to hold them all, only his face up from his eyes could be seen behind the parcels.
‘Ah thanks Gifter,” he said, his voice muffled, by all the gifts. “Thank you for all the effort you have put in to welcoming me, but understand that I’m just happy to be with you. Your offering of material things does not make me love you more.” And he turned and tried to walk away.
The toys went back to the food and drink, but Bella continued to look after the king and in a moment, saw him stumble! She left her chair in a jiffy and got to him as fast as she could.
“Please your majesty king, let me help.” She knelt down at his feet and took in her hand a loose bootlace. With much care and concentration Bella made two bows and took a shaky breath. “Over… the fence… and through… the rabbit hole… then stretch,” she had done it again and it was her finest bow yet!
Shyly she looked up at the king sorting his face, only seeing presents, and said, “Now you won’t trip.”
Block Nine
Bella heard the scream piercingly clear—it had come from her mum. Mother Doll scampered over to her daughter. “I’m dreadfully sorry Your Grace.” Mother Doll’s courtesy was painful to watch. “You naughty, naughty child! You are NOT to bother the king!” Bella’s sister stood beside Mother Doll, and with joy witnessed the colour red swamp Bella’s face. Novella’s happiness did not last—she was surprised, as was her mother, by the king’s response.
“Do not admonish the little one, for what she has done has blessed me—the most out of all the day.” Unexpectedly Toy Maker rid his arms of Gifter’s presents, unburdened now to look upon the wee girl. Bella was transfixed, swallowed up in the king’s eyes, she could not look away, or ever wanted to. He spoke only to her, everything and everyone melted away. “You did not have to read for me, you did not have to dance for me or cook or sing.” Toy Maker bent low and gently brushed a stray woollen hair out of her button eye. ‘You just have be what I made you to be. I will ask of you nothing more than your ability allows. But do you know what has touched me even more?” Bella shook her head. “Your genuine heart of service… this is truly a beautiful thing.” Still looking into her eyes, Toy Maker straightened his back. Next he spoke so that all could hear. “Many will serve to be noticed, but you precious Bella, serve while no one else sees.”
Bella did not feel worthy she had barely done anything. “But I-” she began. The king did not let her finish.
“The simpliest little thing, can often mean the greatest to me.”
And with that the king moved on, leaving behind him all of Gifter’s presents.

It's tiring work, I was busy, I remember to call you in the morning, but it was too early so I was going to last night. But then we had a wrap party and I was home late and went to bed). see relatedLegend of the Seeker Wardrobe Fitting
Last month during my initial job search I signed up with Kam Talent 13th of Febuary. A couple of weeks ago they emailed me to check my availablity for filming on Disney's 'Legend of the Seeker' (based on Terry Goodkind's 'Wizard's First Rule') between the 24th - 26th of Febuary. It was for episode 20 of the First season. Turned out I wasn't picked by the casting team in the end. But Friday last week Kam Talent contacted me by phone. I had been picked for episode 21 instead. I will be playing a villager. My wardrobe fitting is tomorrow at 9:00 in the Henderson Studios, studio 5.
I rang my mate Alan who lives in Henderson. I will stay the night tonight and then walk to the Studios from his place. It will save me money that way, and there is little chance of being late.

The Knight and the Gourds 1
1.
Marmion
Seven months later
Marmion the spell-caster was well respected among his peers in the high castle of Randolph (named after the King’s great grandfather) in the province of Kwailah. In peaceful times he entertained the children with marvellous magic and tremendous tricks and in dangerous times he aided the war effort with masterly magic and terrible tricks. He always came through for Castle Randolph much to the adoration and praise of the peasants and even the royalty, except the king, he wasn’t easily impressed, he expected all who lived in the province to give his kingdom service. The seer-magician drank in the praise and adoration he received with great relish, it was the wine he got drunk on and he was addicted.
Though it appeared that way Marmion didn’t align himself with anyone. It was himself he served, he was a ‘free spirit’ he would often say, and went from Castle Randolph as it took his fancy, but he always found himself coming back. He loved the place so much so that when he was invited by the king to set up a small school for those who showed any gift for the magical arts, that he took up the opportunity with both hands. It was indeed a gracious gift from the king, and Marmion often acknowledges the king for it, yet he still wanted things on his terms and announced that he would only teach six months of a year, you see he often liked to traverse the land and refused to be tied down. However the seer-magician knew that if he wasn’t careful he’d find himself taking up permanent residence at Castle Randolph. He couldn't…not yet anyhow, he would continue to travel. He was in fact planning to do so again very soon.
¤
In Castle Randolph there had been great excitement of late. The king’s beautiful wife, Queen Ladonna was eight months pregnant. The King and Queen already had a son—sixteen year old Prince Erling. The Prince fussed after his mother a lot, especially now, in the state she was in. He cared much for her and even more so, when he had discovered one day from the Records Keeper that Queen Ladonna had nearly died giving birth to the prince. This is why it had been so many years before Queen Ladonnna was willing to fall pregnant a second time, and why the king answered the door himself seven months before.
It is the nature of this concern that brought Prince Erling before his father the king. By his side was Marmion. The prince was pleading with King Randolph to permit him to travel to the village of Fiopitah where he had heard tell of a marvellous doctor living there. Prince Erling believed that this man should be taken into the castle, so that he could be present at the time of the queen’s birth-giving. It was a fair enough request as their castle doctor had recently succumbed to death and passed on.
“Oh please Father!?”
“Son you are too inexperienced. Sir Caddington tells me that you haven’t been keeping up with your swordsmanship training,” the prince was about to protest, the king ploughed on. “He has informed me that you are not ready for any kind of excursion outside these walls! I tend to agree. He tells me you are unable to defend yourself adequately.”
The prince closed his eyes he hated Sir Caddington, probably even more than that self-righteous knight Sir Argus de Amor! King Randolph’s voice cut into his thoughts. “If something befell you it will kill your mother and then I would have lost both of my children.”
“You can’t keep me locked up inside the castle ground all my life, father! I’ll take the whole guard with me, if you so deem it.”
“The prince is right sire,” broke in Marmion with daring. As much has the king appreciated Marmion’s service in the past he was beginning to get sick at the sight of him. His pitch black hair slicked back and the smirk that so often played on his bronzy, elongated face. The king has never liked his unsettling green-blue eyes, nor his short, showy goatee—it appeared sharp enough to cut a comb in half. The king silently battered away his negative thoughts. The least he could do was hear him out, even though the seer’s tone of voice had a hint of arrogance. “All respect that is due you, how can the prince gain any form of experience if he remains here in these dusty halls. He will be ruling the lands in your stead once you have gone to be with heaven my lord, but how can he rule lands he has never seen?”
OK, thought the king. Let’s see how well you follow orders Marmion “I may consider it Marmion, if you can be his guide?”
“I am afraid not Your Majesty, I have pressing business to attend to…” here we go “…of a personal manner. I myself have been preparing to leave Castle Randolph this very afternoon.”
“I can order it upon you Marmion.” The king was also tiring of these constant disappearing acts; he wasn't going to settle down any time soon. King Randolph would quite like having a seer-magician close by, he could be a very powerful battle tool and he could also be monitored, but this man never stayed put, the king thought his offer of his own school would keep the magician here all year round. King Randolph had often wondered what he actually did while he was abroad. He was beginning to dislike it and he suddenly grew agitated. “By the way your latest vision has been a long time in coming, Marmion. I am beginning to think that the battle you saw in your vision for my crown is not going to happen at all. Perhaps your ‘powers’ of sight are dimming.”
Marmion had no idea where that came from, was his charm rubbing away? He loathed his ability questioned so suddenly and so bluntly, even by kings. The seer-magician humoured the ruler. He chose his words carefully and sought a confident and even tone. “It is for that reason I must go, my liege” he bowed low, to hide his ugly grimace and the fire in his jade-like eyes. He composed himself, straightened and looked bravely into the face of the king. “I have heard mumblings of a possible threat to the east beyond the Crimson Rangers, hence that is my desire to go, sire. To quash the threat before it can even reach your castle gates.”
This surprised the king and he silently berated himself, he had been careless with his accusation. Would the seer suspect his concern over him. He must at once put Marmion at ease. But he must do so discretely. “This is your personal matter? It would seem that it is also mine.”
“This is true, my liege” said Marmion.
The king nodded thoughtfully. Just then Annaliesia entered into the throne room. She curtseyed. “Your mead and bread Milord. The king beckoned her forward, Marmion went on. “But will you consider Bardolf to go in my stead with the prince to Fiopitar”
“And who is Bardolf?” the king took the food and drink from the maid’s serving plate.
“An apprentice from my latest intake, not only is he a proficient magician, he is also adept with the staff. He would be an excellent choice and well qualified to protect Your Majesty’s precious son.”
The king took a sip of his fermented honey-water and considered the proposal. “...I will allow it.”
“Thank you Father. You are the greatest King in all the land!” cried Prince Erling.
“Do not thank me so soon child… I shall also send with you Sir Argus de Amor.”
“Oh but he is such a bo-ore, Father! He’s a goody two-shoes, always trying to give me advice.”
“That you should be listening to, no doubt! You shall have Sir Argus with you or stay here!”
“I would agree with your father, Prince Erling,” said Marmion wisely. “Sir Argus is an excellent choice.”
“Alright,” resigned the boy prince.
“Then it is decided,” said the king satisfied. “Marmion introduce my son to your Bardolf, than you are released to go and squash this uprising you are... sensing.”
“Thank you my liege.” Marmion flashed his crooked smile. “It is always an honour to serve you.”
“You are dismissed,” the King said kindly, and the seer left followed by the prince. The king looked and saw Queen Ladonna’s maid dusting. “Annaliesia?”
She stopped her work and faced the king. He prevented her from curtseying again and said “Could you please go and fetch Sir Caddington for me.”
“At once milord.” Annaleisia seemed to have this knack of knowing where everyone was.
Annaliesia was soon back with Sir Caddington. The jovial knight was a rather plump man in his forties and ever remained eager to get into a brawl. Any excuse would suffice.
“I am at your service.” bowed the knight decisively. “What can I do for you, sire. Does the enemy run rampant within our walls? I shall tear them to shreds and burn their carcasses!”
“Peace Sir Caddington and I will tell you. Annaleisia…no, you silly woman, you don’t have to curtsey every time you’re spoken too.”
“Sorry Your Majesty.”
“Yes...well…anyway you are dismissed.”
“Yes my lord.” leaving promptly... after she’d curtseyed.
¤
“This way my prince,” said Marmion glancing behind him, then spun around seeing a figure recede into the distance. “Prince where are you going!”
“I think I just saw Annaleisia with Sir Caddington going toward the throne room!” he yelled back happily. “Father must be about to tell him that I’m going on my little excursion. I must see the look Caddington’s big red face when father tells him that. Ha! Ha! Don’t worry Marmion I know where you’re going. I’ll be there shortly.” Marmion sighed and let the boy go.
In the throne room the king addressed the knight. “Now Sir Caddington. I’d like you to go on a silent mission.”
“A silent mission!” he smiled. “Sounds wonderful.”
“I have no real reason to suspect this man, but he has been rather allusive of late and I’ve noticed that his mind has been on other things, even perhaps secret things.”
“Who is this man milord! I’ll have his head!”
“I don’t want his head Caddington. I just want you to keep an eye on him. He goes this afternoon toward the Crimson Ranges.”
“Many a dark thing broods under the mountains there, sire.”
“Yes and it is for that exact reason that our seer-magician, Marmion travels there. He believes a strike on are bountiful castle will come from there. Keep on his tail. I want to be sure that he is on the level, JUST as a precaution you understand.”
“I understand.”
“There is to be no blood shed.”
Sir Caddington’s face became solemn. “If it is your will, Your Majesty.”
“It is my will. No one is to know about this.”
“It is one hundred per cent secure, milord.”
But I’m afraid it wasn’t one hundred per cent secure. Someone had been listening behind the closed throne room door.
¤
In fact Marmion had two apprentices, the other a young man of 17, a year younger than Bardolf and he answered to the name, Barrington. Bardolf and Barrington on the urging of one dear to them made the journey to Castle Randolph in the hope that they would be chosen by the great Marmion as his students. They were not disappointed. The other remaining five, however, were resentful. Bardolf and Barrington had just walked in off the country and was quickly selected by Marmion. Marmion knew well the feelings of the unchosen hopefuls, but he had his reasons and cared not what others thought.
The boys were an intriguing pair, both very handsome with piercing blue eyes and sandy blond hair, good strength in their sun baked arms and thick set jaws. They were often approached by many wanting to get acquainted with them, but they were never very good at repaying the compliment. They kept much to themselves. Whenever the two were asked about their parents they simply refused to talk about it. Many in the castle felt sorry for them and speculated that perhaps they had lost their parents due to the civil war a few years back.
“Bardolf!” called Marmion once he was back in his wizard’s quarters. “Come, I have suggested to the king that you should accompany the prince to the village of Fiopitah. He seeks a doctor there.”
And shall I also prepare?” asked Barrington.
“Barrington-boy you are not worthy to ride with such esteemed personnel. I regret that I choose you over one of the other more qualified young magicians. I see that now.”
Barrington was cross and sick of all the disparagement “Curse the day you were born!”
“Curb your anger Barrington-boy you are being disrespectful to your master.” Marmion looked away from the younger and looked fondly upon the older. “Stay Bardolf and lets discuss further your assignment.” Without facing the other teen Marmion said. “Barrington-boy take a walk in the garden would you. Practice wilting the roses, quickly now, before the prince arrives.”
Fumed the teen left, slamming the door behind him.

I love writing. I write poems, children stories & parodies eg. Dick Tracer (Dick Tracy), Tabby Pother and the Philosopher's Bones (think you can guess) and Shamus Blonde (James Bond). I also write original material. Two such series that have worked with the children at my church are "The Nine Spirit Trees (11 part story)" and "The Children of the Son Adventures (19 episodes over 3 years)" - You can find my stories on fictionpress.com under the pseudonym Glehnmarc. I enjoy music, especially at night when I'm trying to go to sleep or when I'm writing. My Mum and Dad live in Australia now. I'm not married yet, but my sister is and she has had her 5th child this year (2008). She has always wanted a girl. Her first 4 kids were boys, now she can rest from childbearing the fifth was a girl! Cara named her Caitlyn which means 'promised one' and she believes that with all her heart. (sigh) I can't wait to have kids. Well, be seeing ya - or at least reading ya.
